Terms of service

A simple agreement, written as it is

These terms are short because the service itself is simple: mostly free, one paid annual feature, refundable within 14 days. The list below leaves nothing out.

GOVERNING TEXT

The Chinese version at tacet.ink/terms is the authoritative text of these terms. This English translation is provided for convenience; in any conflict between the two, the Chinese version prevails.

What the service is

默·Tacet (tacet.ink) is a private journal tool that works in the browser: writing, local storage, end-to-end encrypted cloud backup with multi-device sync, full export, and share links. The service is provided "as is", with no ads and no tracking.

Free plan

The core features are free forever: writing, unlimited local entries, 100 encrypted cloud backups, multi-device sync, full export (Markdown/JSON and an encrypted archive), and the recovery kit. The free plan never asks for payment details, and we will never delete any of your data because of a quota.

Annual plan (paid feature)

The annual plan is USD 24/year (launch price USD 8/year). Payments are handled by Polar as our merchant of record. Prices exclude local taxes; the final amount at checkout is calculated and shown by Polar based on your location. The paid plan includes:

Unlimited cloud backupRemoves the 100-entry encrypted cloud backup limit.
Share expiryThe share-link expiry cap rises from 7 days to 90 days; the share count cap rises to 100 (free: 20).
Image attachmentsImages per entry rise from 5 to 30 (enforced on both the server and the device).
What never changesExport is always free, there are no nagging prompts, no ads, and no AI analysis. Paying changes nothing about our privacy stance (see the paid-plan exception section of the privacy policy).

After a successful payment you receive a license key. Once redeemed in the app, your anonymous account is upgraded to the annual plan. Receipts and refunds are handled by Polar; the payment email lives only in Polar.

Annual pass validity

The annual pass is a one-time payment valid for one year and does not auto-renew: whether to renew is your call at expiry, by purchasing and redeeming a new pass. When it expires the account returns to the free plan, followed by a 90-day grace period during which your cloud backups become read-only and can still be fully exported; a new purchase restores normal access. After the grace period, cloud backups beyond the free quota are removed from the server; your local data and anything within the free quota are never deleted. Payments and receipts are handled by Polar as merchant of record; the receipt email lives only in Polar. The license is not tied to a single device; after redemption it applies to your account.

14-day refund

Every purchase is covered by a 14-day refund: within 14 days of purchase, request it via billing@tacet.ink or the Polar receipt link and you get a full refund, no reason required. Refunds go back through Polar by the original payment method. After processing, your account returns to the free plan (if your cloud backups exceed 100 entries, the surplus is kept on the server but new backups pause; your local data and export are entirely unaffected, and nothing is ever deleted).

Accounts and termination

You have no account in the usual sense: only an anonymous number with a passphrase that only you hold. You can delete your account in the app at any time (erased immediately, no retention period) and export everything at any time. If we shut the service down (or if you breach these terms, for example by trying to break into someone else's account or abusing the share channel), we will announce it on this page in advance and leave a reasonable window to leave; apart from that, we will never terminate your service on our own initiative.

Limitation of liability

Entries are encrypted with your passphrase: we cannot read them, and we cannot restore them for you. If you lose the passphrase and have no recovery kit, recovery is impossible by design; that is the structure, not a malfunction, and we accept no liability for content that cannot be recovered because of it. The service is provided as is, with no promise of zero downtime; our total liability for outages or data loss is capped at the paid, unused portion of your annual fee. These terms do not affect consumer rights that cannot be excluded by law.

Governing law

These terms are interpreted under the laws of Taiwan (ROC). Disputes are first handled in good-faith negotiation; failing that, the court of the operator's place of residence has jurisdiction of first instance.

Changes to these terms

Substantive changes will update this page and its "last updated" date. With no email list, we cannot notify you proactively; major changes (price, refund policy) are announced in the app. For payments already made, changes do not retroactively affect periods already in effect.
